Fancast Friday: Mara Dyer Trilogy

Friday, 9 January 2015

It's the second Fancast Friday here on the blog and today, I'm going to be doing some imaginary casting of the actors I would like to see play the characters of one of my top top top book series that I adored in 2014 and possibly ever, the Mara Dyer series, should there be an adaptation for screen.
Personally, I would really like the Mara Dyer series to be adapted into a TV series simply because there is so much intricate and wonderful detail that I would hate for it to get watered down in a film version.
I'd like to point out that the sometimes my castings may not be a hundred perfectly true to the looks and appearance that are probably stated in the novel. I'm going by the kind of character appearance I pictured while reading so some features may be totally off.

I've always found it difficult to nail a distinct face for Mara in my head. She's described as fair in the book, but I've always pictured Mara as slightly darker skin due to her Indian heritage which does indeed play an important factor in the series. If a Mara Dyer adaptation ever comes to fruition I hope that the casting directors don't cast a totally white actress.

I, myself, would like to see a fresh face play our female protagonist, but there are a few considerably known and established actresses that I could see playing Mara.

One of my main picks for Mara is Canadian actress Katie Findlay.

While she isn't totally a fresh face, Katie recently starred in critically acclaimed civil rights drama How to Get Away with Murder, I haven't seen her fancasted as Mara yet. I've been a fan of Katie's for a bit and was thrilled when I found out that she would be back on my screen in Murder after the cancellation of The Carrie Diaries.
I think Katie would make an excellent Mara because she has proven she can play a diverse range of characters from perky (Carrie's Maggie) to dark and secretive (Murder's Rebecca). She nails her characters and plays them so convincingly that you forget that underneath the dark leather jacket and thick eyeliner of Rebecca is comic book, sci-fi nerd Katie. She's one of the very few actresses that I can picture really pulling off Mara.

Another choice for Mara would be the gorgeous, English actress Noami Scott who I have seen mentioned as a good fit for Mara several times online before. Personally, I'd drift more to Naomi as Mara more than the other popular fancasts like Crystal or Kaya Scodelario because I think her appearance, and Katie's, is more suited to the Mara I had pictured.

Straight away I recognised Noami from the Disney Channel T.V. movie Lemonade Mouth which was all the way back in 2011. However, since then she has starred in teen drama Terra Nova. Based on her filmography, she hasn't been in a multitude of shows and films which means that a Mara Dyer adaptation could finally be a breakout role for her.

Let me just say that no actor will ever be the perfect Noah Shaw to me. If you don't know already, I am so madly in love with Noah Shaw. I don't think anyone could live up to my expectations of him in real life or in a Mara Dyer adaptation. Alas, if I was in a situation where I absolutely had to cast a Noah Shaw for an adaptation because the fate of the world depended on it, then these are my top choices.

Max Irons is most likely the number one Noah Shaw fancast that exists.
I think Max would be great. I mean, why not? He's British like Noah. He smokes just like Noah and looks perfectly good while doing it. Also, he's handsome - just like Noah. However, I'm not sure he could pass for a high school teen thesedays (No offence, Mr Irons!) Appearance wise he fits the bill and would be a fantastic Noah. He is an incredibly talented actor too, so I have no qualms about his ability to play the charming, unkempt bastard that is Noah Shaw. I've watched plenty of Max Irons interviews and instantly fell in love.
I looked back on this post and realised that I'd picked fairly typical fancasts for Noah. So, Sam from the future has gone back deleted those to throw in a few newer fancasts.

I first published this post over a year ago in 2015 and now, in 2016, this new Netflix show just aired, bringing to my attention a new young British actor that would be perfect for Noah.

I don't know if you've seen it or heard of it, but there's little show call Stranger Things that aired recently. Charlie Heaton, who plays Jonathan Byers on the show, instantly fit the image I had in my head whilst reading.

I'd really like to see American actor Dane DeHaan as Mara's mad-ex from Laurelton.

Dane completely won me over as Harry Osborn in The Amazing Spider-man 2 with his transformation as the Green Goblin. Accompanied by his eye bags and intense stare, I am convinced that Dane would be make a wonderful Jude.

There was something about him in Spider-Man that seemed to really make an impact on viewers as my Twitter timeline was full of Dane DeHaan related tweets for months after the film came out. Even with the repulsive and terrifying Green Goblin make-up everyone still found him attractive and lovable. Maybe he could bring some of that to Jude as I initially and quite rightly hated Jude from when he cornered Mara in the asylum to tormenting her after his supposed death. But in Retribution of Mara Dyer, I came to sympathise a little bit with Jude after learning what he had been through. Dane would make a horrifyingly great Jude and you cannot convince me otherwise.

If there are any budding TV networks or film companies willing to transform Michelle Hodkin's epic book series into something for screen and you just so happened to randomly stumble upon my blog, which let's face it isn't likely to happen at all, feel free to take your pick from this bunch.

Let me know who you'd like to see play Mara, Noah, Jude and any of the other Mara Dyer Series characters and maybe leave a comment on what you'd like to see next Fancast Friday.

Hope you have a great day!
Until next time,
