Dark Places Movie?!

Friday, 19 June 2015

A couple of months ago I posted my review for Gillian Flynn's Dark Places. Upon researching who other fans of the book have fancasted as the characters I stumbled upon some excellent news.

OK, so the title of this blog post says it all. A Dark Places movie has been made!!! Cue the excited squealing of me and every single other fan of the thrilling 2009 novel.

Left; The French teaser poster for the film that boasts a talented, stellar cast including the likes of Charlize Theron, Christina Hendricks, Nicholas Hoult (swoon) and Chloe Grace Moretz.

There's been little information about this gripping book to movie adaptation, but it looks like planned release is August 7th this year for the US according to the flick's IMDB page.

While the casting for the Dark Places movie is already set in stone - seeing as they've already filmed the movie - I thought it would still be fun to do a little fancast of who I would've liked to see play Gillian Flynn's twisted characters while also evaluating the movie adaptation's cast.

Libby is played by Charlize Theron and while I do think that Ms Theron is a brilliant actress, I just don't see it. I can't picture her as Libby. I mean Libby's barely five feet tall and we have a 5ft 9 actress playing her. Come on! I stand up for all my fellow vertically challenged folk out there when I say that Libby should've been played by a shorter person. Book accuracy, people!

My choice for Libby will always be the lovely, 5ft 1 actress Holliday Grainger. The Brit actress is known for her roles in historical or period dramas such as The Borgias and Jane Eyre. Holliday first came to my attention in last year's film The Riot Club and she recently starred in Cinderella as one of the ugly step-sisters.

Played by Corey Stoll in the movie, another casting choice that I just can't get my head around because I guess I pictured Ben so differently to how he's depicted in the movie.

For older Ben Day, I'd pictured someone like Charlie Cox

The British actor who is currently starring and winning hearts of Marvel fangirls everywhere as Matt Murdock in Netflix series Daredevil.

He has also had roles in Oscar winning, Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything and dramas such as Downtown Abbey and Broadwalk Empire.
I would like to see Young Ben Day be played by Paul Dano.
If you don't know who Dano is, where you have you been? The actor is probably best known for his portrayal as Eli Sunday in 2007's There Will Be Blood which saw him get nominated for a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor. Dano has also starred in flicks like Little Miss Sunshine where he played Neitzsche-reading teenager Dwayne Hoover who has taken a vow of silence until he completes his goal of being a test pilot and as the mentally disturbed would-be kidnapper Alex Jones in Prisoners.

While I may have imagined Paul Dano as Ben while reading, in the actual film Young Ben Day is portrayed by Tye Sheridan. The eighteen-year-old who will play the wicked character tied to Satanic sacrifices and Devil worship has also been cast to play Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse which will hit screens in 2016. Tye Sheridan is definitely one to watch!

OK, this casting I can wholeheartedly agree with and give a big thumbs up to casting directors who chose Nicholas Hoult to play the Kill Club member fascinated with the Day massacre, Lyle Wirth. This is what dreams are made of.

Nicholas is a hundred percent who I pictured playing Lyle. In fact I was imagining the Brit actor, best known for his work in the X-Men prequels, Skins and Jack the Giant Slayer, while reading the novel.

Don't get me wrong, Chloe Grace Moretz is an uber talented actress but I really can't see her as Diondra. For me, she's not gritty enough.

My choice for Diondra would be Irish actress Saoirse Ronan. I'm a huge fan of - say it with me 'Seer-sha' - Saoirse's work. The twenty one year old came to prominence in Atonement alongside James McAvoy and Keira Knightley and has gone on to star in films such as The Host, How I Live Now and one of my all time favourites The Grand Budapest Hotel.

For Older Diondra, I picture someone like Gemma Arterton.

If you've kept up with my past Fancast Friday's you'll be familiar with seeing me cast this Brit actress in everything and anything. But that's because Gemma is ube
r talented.

She's played an damned farmgirl in Tess of the D'Urbervilles and a Bond Girl in Quantum of Solace.

Let me know who you'd like to see play these characters and what do you think of the trailer?

Hope you have a great day! Happy reading!
Until next time,
