After years of dreaming about attending the iconic RHS Chelsea Flower Show, I finally had the chance to go last month—one last hurrah before diving headfirst into some home decorating—and I’m happy to report it was every bit as magical as I’d hoped.

First Impressions
The Tuesday and Wednesday of the show are reserved exclusively for RHS members, offering a more relaxed and enjoyable experience compared to the general public days later in the week. The atmosphere feels a little less rushed, and it’s easier to take your time exploring the displays without being shoulder-to-shoulder with other visitors.
The show opens bright and early at 8am, and I highly recommend getting there as close to opening as possible. We arrived around 9am, and it was already beginning to fill up—but still felt spacious enough to enjoy the gardens and exhibits without having to jostle for a view. By late morning, the crowds noticeably increased, especially around the most popular show gardens, so that early start really makes a difference.
Investing in an RHS membership to gain access to these members-only days is absolutely worth it, especially if this is a bucket-list experience for you. Not only does the membership give you early access to Chelsea and the RHS’ other shows, but you’ll also benefit from discounted show tickets and receive a beautifully produced monthly magazine filled with gardening inspiration, expert tips, and seasonal advice—perfect for anyone with a green thumb or a budding interest in horticulture.
For £108 per person (all-day ticket), we spent about five hours wandering the grounds, completely absorbed in the stunning floral artistry. From grand show gardens to meticulously curated small plots, every corner of the event offers something to admire. It’s easy to lose track of time while moving between the various displays, pausing to take photos, speak with vendors, and simply enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.
The Displays and Gardens
The Chelsea Flower Show is world-renowned for its spectacular feature gardens, and seeing them up close in real life is truly breathtaking—though it’s worth noting that they’re often much smaller than they appear on television! There’s a certain magic in seeing all the intricate details firsthand, but don’t be surprised if the scale is more intimate than expected.
That said, be prepared for crowds, particularly around the most talked-about displays—looking at you, Monty Don’s Dog Garden. The headline-grabbing gardens attract a sea of visitors, and it can be a challenge to get a clear, uninterrupted view. I can only imagine how much busier it gets on the public days, when the show is at full capacity.
Despite the hustle and bustle, the creativity on display is nothing short of extraordinary. From imaginative planting schemes and thoughtful use of space to clever landscaping and strong thematic storytelling, each garden is a work of living art. It’s a visual and sensory feast that inspires, surprises, and delights at every turn.
Exhibition Hall: A Hidden Gem
One of the standout highlights for me was the Great Pavilion, also known as the exhibition hall. It’s a vibrant hub filled with passionate growers, specialist nurseries, plant researchers, and enthusiastic experts all eager to share their knowledge.
The sheer variety on display is astonishing—you’ll find everything from rare and exotic plants to heritage varieties, innovative garden tools, and beautifully crafted accessories. Whether you’re a seasoned horticulturist or a curious newcomer, there’s something to fascinate and inspire around every corner.
The atmosphere inside is electric—buzzing with energy, enthusiasm, and a deep love for all things botanical. It’s also a fantastic place to chat with growers and learn directly from the people who cultivate the plants you love, often with decades of experience behind them.
And of course, the Chelsea Flower Show gift shop deserves a special mention. Packed with charming souvenirs, it offers a delightful range of items—from delicious cakes and floral-themed tea towels to elegant stationery and RHS-branded keepsakes. Whether you’re shopping for yourself or picking up a gift for a fellow plant lover, it’s hard to leave empty-handed!

Tips for Visiting
- Buy an RHS membership. It gives you access to the quieter members-only days, making for a more enjoyable visit and a chance to see the flowers at their freshest!
- Get there early. Arriving early helps you beat the crowds, especially around the most popular gardens.
- For those on a budget, don’t worry! You can still soak up the floral spirit by visiting the free Belgravia in Bloom and Chelsea in Bloom (more to come!) displays around the neighborhood. It’s a lovely way to experience the creativity of the show without a ticket.
In Bloom Highlights

So, Is It Worth It?
Absolutely! Whether you’re a dedicated gardener, a lover of design, or simply someone who appreciates beauty and creativity, the Chelsea Flower Show is an experience like no other. Yes, it can get busy, but the vibrant atmosphere, breathtaking displays, and the sheer passion and expertise of everyone involved more than make up for the crowds.
It’s a celebration of horticulture at its highest level, and there’s something undeniably special about being surrounded by people who all share a love for plants, gardens, and outdoor spaces.
